We Were Soldiers [Blu-ray]

We Were Soldiers [Blu-ray] Review

We Were Soldiers [Blu-ray] Overview

The year is 1965 and America is at War with North Vietnam. Commanding the air cavalry is Lt. Col. Hal Moore (Gibson), a born leader committed to his troops. His target: the La Drang Valley, called "The Valley of Death." As Moore prepares for one of the most violent battles in U.S. history, he delivers a stirring promise to his soldiers and their families: "I will leave no man behind…dead or alive. We will all come home together."

We Were Soldiers [Blu-ray] Specifications

Based on the book by Lt. Col. Harold Moore (ret.) and journalist Joseph Galloway, We Were Soldiers offers a dignified reminder that the Vietnam War yielded its own crop of American heroes. Departing from Hollywood's typically cynical treatment of the war, writer-director Randall Wallace focuses on the first engagement of American soldiers with the North Vietnamese enemy in November 1965. Moore (played with colorful nuance by Mel Gibson) and nearly 400 inexperienced troopers from the U.S. Air Cavalry were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese Army soldiers, and the film re-creates this brutal firefight with graphic authenticity, while telling the parallel story of grieving army wives back home. While UPI reporter Galloway (Barry Pepper) risks his life to chronicle the battle, Wallace offers a balanced (though somewhat fictionalized) perspective while eliciting laudable performances from an excellent cast. Like the best World War II dramas of the 1940s, We Were Soldiers pays tribute to brave men while avoiding the pitfalls of propaganda. --Jeff Shannon

Boy Meets World: The Complete Third Season

Boy Meets World: The Complete Third Season Review

Boy Meets World: The Complete Third Season Overview

Cory is your average guy. He has a best friend from the other side of the tracks, a teacher that constantly keeps him on his toes, and a friend named Topanga whom he has trouble understanding. With the support of his parents and his brother Eric, Cory learns to cope with the roller coaster called growing up.

Boy Meets World: The Complete Third Season Specifications

Boy Meets World marks season 3 with a new credit sequence, a TV internship for 18-year-old Eric (Will Friedel)--who longs to work as a weatherman--and a relationship for 14-year-old Cory (Ben Savage, now with a deeper voice) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel). When his parents left at the end of the previous year, Shawn (Rider Strong) moved in with English teacher Jonathan Turner (Anthony Tyler Quinn), and that's where the action begins.

While Cory has Shawn, Topanga has Trini (Brittany Murphy), Frankie (Ethan Suplee) has Joey (Blake Soper), and Mr. Turner has Eli Williams (Alex Désert), who joins John Adams High as media arts teacher. Under his tutelage, Cory learns the price of journalistic freedom when his exposé costs Janitor Bud (Bob Larkin) his job, though Mr. Feeny (William Daniels) finds another way to use his talents (in the 1972 musical 1776, Daniels played John Adams). Cory and Shawn also come to see different sides to Feeny, their principal, and Frankie, a poetic thug.

Just as Cory is transitioning into adulthood, Boy Meets World's third season has a transitional feel as the tone turns serious more often, like in "Hometown Hero," in which Cory and Shawn break into the chemistry lab and start a fire, and "Brother-Brother," in which Cory has a hard time letting Eric go. It's still an entertaining show, but a little less funny, even if it allows Strong and Daniels to do some of their best work. Fortunately, there are still plenty of upbeat episodes. In "Train of Fools," for instance, Cory throws a New Year's Eve party in a subway car, and in "I Was a Teenage Spy," he travels back to 1957 in a nod to Happy Days. Unlike previous sets, this one eschews audio commentary. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

District 9 [Blu-ray]

District 9 [Blu-ray] Review

District 9 [Blu-ray] Feature

  • Condition: New
  • Format: Blu-ray
  • Anamorphic; Color; DTS Surround Sound; Subtitled; Widescreen

District 9 [Blu-ray] Overview

From producer Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science fiction thriller that "soars on the imagination of its creators" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). With stunning special effects and gritty realism, the film plunges us into a world where the aliens have landed... only to be exiled to a slum on the fringes of Johannesburg. Now, one lone human discovers the mysterious secret of the extraterrestrial weapon technology. Hunted and hounded through the bizarre back alleys of an alien shantytown, he will discover what it means to be the ultimate outsider on your own planet.

District 9 [Blu-ray] Specifications

A provocative science fiction drama, District 9 boasts an original story that gets a little lost in blow-'em-up mayhem. Set in Johannesburg, South Africa, District 9 begins as a mock documentary about the imminent eviction of extraterrestrials from a pathetic shantytown (called District 9). The creatures, it turns out, have been on Earth for years, having arrived sickly and starving. Initially received by humans with compassion and care, the aliens are now mired in blighted conditions typical of long-term refugee camps unwanted by a hostile, host society. With the creatures' care contracted out to a for-profit corporation, the shantytown has become a violent slum. The aliens sift through massive piles of junk while their minders secretly research weapons technology that arrived on the visitors' spacecraft.

Against this backdrop is a more personal story about a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley) who is accidentally exposed to a DNA-altering substance. As he begins metamorphosing into one of the creatures, Wikus goes on the run from scientists who want to harvest his evolving, new parts and aliens who see him as a threat. When he pairs up with an extraterrestrial secretly planning an escape from Earth, however, what should be a fascinating relationship story becomes a series of firefights and explosions. Nuance is lost to numbing violence, and the more interesting potential of the film is obscured. Yet, for a while District 9 is a powerful movie with a unique tale to tell. Seamless special effects alone are worth seeing: the (often brutal) exchanges between alien and human are breathtaking. --Tom Keogh

Jackass 3 (Single-Disc DVD)

Jackass 3 (Single-Disc DVD) Review

Jackass 3 (Single-Disc DVD) Feature

  • MTV Making Of Special
  • Outtakes
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Time Magazine Trailer

Jackass 3 (Single-Disc DVD) Overview

3 times the laughs. 3 times the stupid. 3 times the pain. The jackass guys are back for their wildest round of mischief and mayhem yet! You’ll laugh ‘til your bladder pops or your spleen spleens as Johnny Knoxville goes roller-skating in a buffalo herd, Bam Margera barrels through a hallway of high-voltage stun guns, and Steve-O takes to the skies in a fully-loaded porta-potty. Get ready to go AC or DC with your choice of theatrical or unrated version, loaded with all the outrageous footage not shown in theaters. So brace yourself for uncensored, unbelievable and totally explicit stunts from the idiots you’ve come to know and love from a safe and sanitary distance!

Jackass 3 (Single-Disc DVD) Specifications

Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and the gang are back in Jackass 3D, with another set of stunts that are painful to watch, yet extremely funny. It's hard not to get caught up in the joy these guys get out of playing together. And that's the key to this movie--even though Knoxville is 39 here, these are boys playing. The film was shot in 3D--this is no cheap conversion--and it brings you into the action, as when the guys attempt a game of beehive tetherball and the theater itself gets swarmed. Some of the 3D camera operators might not have been ready for Jackass; even one of the veteran cinematographers of the Jackass TV show gets repeatedly ill while he tries to shoot scenes. This film is not for the squeamish when it comes to bodily fluids. The best moments are when one of the guys gets that "How did I get myself into this?" look before attempting a stunt, such as running down a hallway rigged with stun guns and cattle prods. Yes, it's juvenile, and you may have to assure yourself that you still have a brain afterward (if you've read Dostoevsky, remind yourself of that fact), but you can't deny that it's darn funny. --Paige Newman

The Complete Metropolis

The Complete Metropolis Review

The Complete Metropolis Feature

  • Metropolis takes place in 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. The tense balance of these two societies is realized through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, many of which presage such sci-fi landmarks as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner. Lavish and spectacular,

The Complete Metropolis Overview

Studio: Kino International Release Date: 11/16/2010 Run time: 148 minutes

The Complete Metropolis Specifications

Fritz Lang's Metropolis belongs to legend as much as to cinema. It's a milestone of sci-fi and German expressionism. Yet the story makes minimal sense, and the "theme" belongs in a fortune cookie; to experience the film's pagan power, you have to see the movie. But for decades we couldn't, not really--not with so many versions, all incomplete, often in public-domain prints like smudged photocopies. This Murnau Foundation restoration changes all that. Some shots, scenes, and subplots may be lost forever, but intertitles indicate how they fit into the original continuity and the characters' individual trajectories. Most crucially, the images are crisp, vibrant, and three-dimensional instead of murky and flattened. The composite sequences (the Tower of Babel, a sea of lusting eyes) have been restored to their hallucinatory ferocity. And there's one moment when you can see a bead of sweat roll down a man's cheek--in medium long-shot. --Richard T. Jameson
