Red Dawn (Collector's Edition)

Red Dawn (Collector's Edition) Review

Red Dawn (Collector's Edition) Overview

Red Dawn opens with one of the most shocking scenes ever filmed; on a peaceful morning, through the windows of a high school classroom, students see paratroopers land on the varsity football field: the invasion of the United States has begun! As their town is overrun by foreign nationals, eight teenagers escape to the mountains. Taking the name of their high school football team, the Wolverines, they wage unremitting guerrilla warfare in defense of their parents, their friends and their country. Powerful, chilling and absolutely gripping, this outstanding film features some of today's most popular stars, including Patrick Swayze (Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Lea Thompson ("Caroline in the City"), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and veteran actor Harry Dean Stanton (Alien). When it comes to thrilling entertainment, Red Dawn wins the war with a vengeance!

Red Dawn (Collector's Edition) Specifications

Truly ridiculous but somehow moving, this right-wing paranoid fantasy by John Milius (The Wind and the Lion) from 1984 concerns a Soviet takeover of the United States and a band of ragtag adolescents who metamorphose into freedom fighters. One can laugh at the notion of Nicaraguans, Cubans, and Russians having worked out a master plan to invade America, but Milius's account of how such a grim day affects a small Western town really does get under one's skin. The cast--most of whom were not yet stars (Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey had probably never heard of a script called Dirty Dancing at the time)--are quite persuasive as nice kids who come to recognize the tragedy of their lost innocence through fierce, uncompromising struggle. Powers Boothe is very good as a pilot who briefly comes to their aid, and Harry Dean Stanton is stirring as a solid working man and father who represents the virtues his sons are fighting for. The DVD release includes production notes, the original theatrical trailer, trivia, scene access, and an optional widescreen presentation. --Tom Keogh

Once Upon a Time in the West (Special Collector's Edition)

Once Upon a Time in the West (Special Collector's Edition) Review

Once Upon a Time in the West (Special Collector's Edition) Overview

When the husband of Jill McBain is killed by ruthless outlaws in the old West, she hires two guns of her own to get revenge.
Genre: Westerns
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 30-JAN-2007
Media Type: DVD

Once Upon a Time in the West (Special Collector's Edition) Specifications

The so-called spaghetti Western achieved its apotheosis inSergio Leone's magnificently mythic (and utterly outlandish) Once upon a Time in the West. After a series of international hits starring Clint Eastwood (from A Fistful of Dollars to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly), Leone outdid himself with this spectacular, larger-than-life, horse-operatic epic about how the West was won. (And make no mistake: this is the wide, wide West, folks--so the widescreen/letterboxed version is strongly recommended.) The unholy trinity of Italian cinema--Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Dario Argento--concocted the story about a woman (Claudia Cardinale) hanging onto her land in hopes that the transcontinental railroad would reach her before a steely-eyed, black-hearted killer (Fonda) does. (The film's advertising slogan was: "There were three men in her life. One to take her ... one to love her ... and one to kill her.") Meanwhile, Leone shoots his stars' faces as if they were expansive Western landscapes, and their towering bodies as if they were looming rock formations in John Ford's Monument Valley. --Jim Emerson

JURASSIC PARK, THE LOST WORLD COLLECTOR'S EDITION 2000 (WIDESCREEN) Overview

Two teams head for Site B, an island where the dinosaurs have been left alone for four years. One is for research, and the other for exploitation. They are forced to team up to survive, despite their differences.
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 24-AUG-2004
Media Type: DVD

JURASSIC PARK, THE LOST WORLD COLLECTOR'S EDITION 2000 (WIDESCREEN) Specifications

In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg's sequel to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn't seem to care that the pieces of this project don't add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). A complete bust. --Tom Keogh

Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition)

Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition) Review

Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition) Feature

  • Screen stars Renee Zellweger (NURSE BETTY, JERRY MAGUIRE) and Hugh Grant (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, NOTTING HILL) craft memorable performances in a delightfully funny comedy that looks at the ups and downs of modern romance! A busy career woman approaching a "certain age," uncomfortably unmarried Bridget (Zellweger) decides to turn over a new page in her life by channeling her thoughts, opinion

Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition) Overview

Academy Award(R) winner Renée Zellweger (Best Supporting Actress, COLD MOUNTAIN, 2003; CHICAGO) and Hugh Grant (LOVE ACTUALLY, TWO WEEKS NOTICE) star in a delightful comedy about the ups and downs of modern romance. Bridget (Zellweger), a busy career woman, decides to turn over a new page in her life by channeling her thoughts, opinions and insecurities into a journal that becomes a hilarious chronicle of her adventures. Soon she becomes the center of attention between a guy who's too good to be true (Grant) and another who's so wrong for her, he could be just right (Colin Firth -- LOVE ACTUALLY)! Based on the best-selling book, BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY is another acclaimed crowd-pleaser from the hit makers of FOUR WEDDING AND A FUNERAL and NOTTING HILL.

Bridget Jones's Diary (Collector's Edition) Specifications

Featuring a blowzy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likeable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy.

If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is also named Mr. Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's coscreenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humor, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful), and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married." The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. --Leslie Felperin

The Thorn Birds Collector's Edition (The Thorn Birds / The Thorn Birds 2 - The Missing Years)

The Thorn Birds Collector's Edition (The Thorn Birds / The Thorn Birds 2 - The Missing Years) Review

The Thorn Birds Collector's Edition (The Thorn Birds / The Thorn Birds 2 - The Missing Years) Overview

The epic miniseries The Thorn Birds is available for the first time as a complete collection. Includes The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years, which covers the mystery years not addressed in the original 1983 miniseries, as an on-pack addition.

The Thorn Birds Collector's Edition (The Thorn Birds / The Thorn Birds 2 - The Missing Years) Specifications

The second most-watched miniseries (after Roots) of all time, The Thorn Birds was originally broadcast in 1983 and captivated viewers with its story of a lifelong conflict between the spirit and the flesh. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Colleen McCullough, the production stars Richard Chamberlain as a Catholic priest named Ralph de Bricassart, whose life in Australia between 1920 and 1962 is one long torment as he pines for his lover, Meggie Carson (Rachel Ward), while seeking advancement in his clergyman career. The passion and the guilt make for compelling drama, but a stellar cast of supporting players adds muscle to the proceedings: Barbara Stanwyck (who won an Emmy for her work as Meggie's tough grandmother), Jean Simmons, Richard Kiley, Christopher Plummer, Bryan Brown, and Mare Winningham. Chamberlain, who was something of the king of the miniseries form at the time, is very good in the lead, as is the often-underrated Ward. Their affair is indeed irresistible to watch, which proves to be true, too, of the story's thick weave of church politics, forbidden desire, social change over decades, and family secrets. --Tom Keogh

Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)

Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition) Review

This movie is a great classic at least that's what I was told by my "teenage" son. I enjoyed having the Collector's Edition with alternate endings, and scenes that were not in the original movie, which are only available with this special edition. This was a gift for my teenage son who was facinated by this movie when he saw it on TV. I had a difficult time locating it in any stores, I can't imagine why??? I finally was told that this movie was "retired", imagine my surprise! I got this movie pack for a very reasonable price from a seller who shipped this item very fast and in great condition. My son would recommend the movie and I would recommend the seller of this item. Both were great in their own way!

Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition) Overview

Nominated for 8 Academy Awards, this classic and compelling Vietnam War epic stars Martin Sheen as Captain Willard, who is sent on a dangerous and mesmerizing odyssey into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade American Colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has succumbed to the horrors of war and barricaded himself in a remote outpost. Also stars Robert Duvall, Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper and Harrison Ford.

Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition) Specifications

I love the smell of a collector's edition in the morning. Everyone's favorite Joseph Conrad adaptation gets the fancy packaging and extras treatment with this release of Apocalypse Now - The Complete Dossier. Both the original theatrical cut and the 2001 Redux version are included, with enough extras to keep one occupied on a long boat trip. Calling this the "complete" dossier is sure to raise hackles among fans who insist that Eleanor Coppola's lauded documentary, Hearts of Darkness, which chronicled husband Francis's harrowing experience making the film, should have been included. (As of this review, Hearts of Darkness has yet to be released on DVD, so battered VHS copies will have to suffice.) Packaged in a cardboard "dossier" sleeve, the two-disc set includes Marlon Brando reading T.S. Eliot's poem "The Hollow Men," new production featurettes, and cast member interviews. Owners of previous editions of either of the cuts might consider how much they want all the officially sanctioned information on this edition. For newcomers to the Vietnam epic, this is an edition worth going crazy for. --Ryan Boudinot

Apocalypse Now
In the tradition of such obsessively driven directors as Erich von Stroheim and Werner Herzog, Francis Ford Coppola approached the production of Apocalypse Now as if it were his own epic mission into the heart of darkness. On location in the storm-ravaged Philippines, he quite literally went mad as the project threatened to devour him in a vortex of creative despair, but from this insanity came one of the greatest films ever made. It began as a John Milius screenplay, transposing Joseph Conrad's classic story "Heart of Darkness" into the horrors of the Vietnam War, following a battle-weary Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) on a secret upriver mission to find and execute the renegade Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has reverted to a state of murderous and mystical insanity. The journey is fraught with danger involving wartime action on epic and intimate scales. One measure of the film's awesome visceral impact is the number of sequences, images, and lines of dialogue that have literally burned themselves into our cinematic consciousness, from the Wagnerian strike of helicopter gunships on a Vietnamese village to the brutal murder of stowaways on a peasant sampan and the unflinching fearlessness of the surfing warrior Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), who speaks lovingly of "the smell of napalm in the morning." Like Herzog's Aguirre: The Wrath of God, this film is the product of genius cast into a pit of hell and emerging, phoenix-like, in triumph. Coppola's obsession (effectively detailed in the riveting documentary Hearts of Darkness, directed by Coppola's wife, Eleanor) informs every scene and every frame, and the result is a film for the ages. --Jeff Shannon

Apocalypse Now Redux
Digitally remastered with 49 minutes of previously unseen footage, Apocalypse Now Redux is the reference standard of Francis Coppola's 1979 epic. A metaphorical hallucination of the Vietnam War, the film was reconstructed by Coppola and editor Walter Murch to enrich themes and clarify the ending. On that basis Redux is a qualified success, more coherent than the original while inviting the same accusations of directorial excess. The restored "French plantation" sequence adds ghostly resonance to the war's absurdity, and Willard's theft of Colonel Kurtz's beloved surfboard adds welcomed humor to the film's nightmarish upriver journey. An encounter with Playboy Playmates seems superfluous compared to the enhanced interplay between Willard and his ill-fated boat crew, but compensation arrives in the hellish Kurtz compound, where Willard's mission--and the performances of Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando--reach even greater heights of insanity, thus validating Redux as the rightful heir to Coppola's triumphantly rampant ambition. --Jeff Shannon

American Graffiti (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection)

American Graffiti (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection) Review

This movie will take you back to the fun times of the early 1960s.

Director George Lucas lived it in the early 1960s in Modesto, California.

If you were a teenager or young adult during the late 1950s and early 1960s, then you're sure to remember the kind of fun that teenagers and young adults had back then - going to drive-ins, drive-in movies, drag racing, cruising, etc. It seemed like everything that was fun seemed to revolve around cars. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but there is some truth to it. People back then worshipped their cars just like people today worship their computers, blackberries, and other technological gadgets. In this era society was cleaner and safer. The middle class prospered. Jobs were plentiful and paid well. Wealth was distributed more evenly. A person could work at the same company for 30-40 years and retire with a pension. Generally speaking, most people were decent people with morals and values. People weren't nearly as greedy as they are now. Illegal drugs were rare in society. Radicalism was at a minimum. America was still in an age of innocence. To quote Bill Maher, "The early '60s were the '50s. There really wasn't much radicalism going on".

My mother was a teenager in the 1950s and in her early 20s in the early 1960s. She always used to talk at great length about all the fun times she had as a teenager cruising Woodward Ave. near Detroit, going to drive-ins, drive-in movies, going on dates, the rock music of that time period, etc. and how the young people of today missed out on all the fun and can't relate to what she did as a teenager. She always proudly said she had 78 boyfriends before she met my father, and a lot of that resulted from cruising. She was a fan of American Graffiti and used to mention it quite frequently and said it is an accurate depiction of what cruising was like in the '50s and early '60s.

If you're someone who lived these fun times back then, then you can relate to this movie, as this movie is set in September 1962 in the area of Modesto, California. Even if you weren't alive back then, you can appreciate this movie. The basic plot is this: It is September 1962 and it is the last night of summer before everybody goes to college. There are actually four stories that are all happening simultaneously (classic George Lucas style - think of the Star Wars movies), but in this movie, they're not related to each other. You'll see scenes showing cruising, school dances, drag racing, drive-ins, and many mischievious acts. Kids out to have a good time before they enter the real world and go their separate ways. The movie takes place almost entirely at night, from sunset to sunrise the next day.

This movie stars Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Suzanne Somers, Mackenzie Phillips, Paul LeMat, Candy Clark, Charles Martin Smith, and legendary disc jockey Wolfman Jack.

This movie is LOADED with rock 'n roll songs from that era. The music starts at the beginning of the movie and never really ends. There are a total of 41 songs that can be heard throughout the movie, and all are big hits from the '50s and early '60s. There is no actual musical score, no background situational music. Instead, the rock songs ARE the soundtrack. Everything from Buddy Holly to Bill Haley & The Comets to The Beach Boys to Chuck Berry, this movie has it all.

This DVD comes with excellent extras, particularly the documentary called The Making Of American Graffiti. It has in-depth interviews with director George Lucas, executive producer Francis Ford Coppola, and nearly all the cast members. It runs about 1 1/2 hours. The stories are very interesting, particularly the stories about the mistakes that were made in the movie, but were kept in the movie by George Lucas. There are also production photographs, the theatrical trailer, and never-before-seen screen tests of the cast.

I can relate to this movie, at least somewhat. Every year near my hometown there is an event called the Woodward Dream Cruise, a car cruise on the third Saturday of every August where people cruise down Woodward Ave. near Detroit in their classic cars from yesteryear. It's a huge event that easily attracts over a million people and is even televised locally. I've been to all 16 of them, from 1995 to 2010. This event was invented to bring back the nostalgia of cruising down Woodward Ave. in the '50s and '60s. Radio stations play songs from that era all day long. Myself, I listen to my hard rock and heavy metal while driving. Generational gap!

But you see? People yearn for this sort of thing. People want to at least pretend to escape back to a time when America was more innocent, safer, more prosperous, cleaner, more secure, had nicer people, far less greedy, and when people weren't so obsessed with chasing the buck as they are now. That's why we've got a national drive-in chain called Sonic. People want to be taken back in time, even if it's just for an hour. I even went to a drive-in movie a few years ago in the parking lot of the now unused Pontiac Silverdome. I hadn't done that since the '70s, because they all disappeared.

So, if you're somebody who lived what is portrayed in American Graffiti, this movie should bring a smile to your face. If you're a younger person, you need to see this movie, and I'll bet you'll like it.

American Graffiti (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection) Overview

A look at one hectic night in the life of a group of high school friends just before they go off to college, jobs, or the army.

American Graffiti (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection) Specifications

Here's how critic Roger Ebert described the unique and lasting value of George Lucas's 1973 box-office hit, American Graffiti: "[It's] not only a great movie but a brilliant work of historical fiction; no sociological treatise could duplicate the movie's success in remembering exactly how it was to be alive at that cultural instant." The time to which Ebert and the film refers is the summer of 1962, and American Graffiti captures the look, feel, and sound of that era by chronicling one memorable night in the lives of several young Californians on the cusp of adulthood. (In essence, Lucas was making a semiautobiographical tribute to his own days as a hot-rod cruiser, and the film's phenomenal success paved the way for Star Wars.) The action is propelled by the music of Wolfman Jack's rock & roll radio show--a soundtrack of pop hits that would become as popular as the film itself. As Lucas develops several character subplots, American Graffiti becomes a flawless time capsule of meticulously re-created memory, as authentic as a documentary and vividly realized through innovative use of cinematography and sound. The once-in-a-lifetime ensemble cast members inhabit their roles so fully that they don't seem like actors at all, comprising a who's who of performers--some of whom went on to stellar careers--including Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, Candy Clark, and Paul Le Mat. A true American classic, the film ranks No. 77 on the American Film Institute's list of all-time greatest American movies. --Jeff Shannon

Midway (Collector's Edition)

Midway (Collector's Edition) Review

As a retired army officer and an adjunct history professor I thought it was important to review what I consider the best war movies depicting the challenges of leadership and the command of men.

The biopic "Midway" is one of the best movies showing how important it is for good leaders to deceive their enemy by being were they are least expected, and using this element of surprise to enable an inferior force defeat a superior force. This concept is expertly portrayed in the film through the character of Admiral Chester Nimitz (Henry Fonda). By having his intelligence staff give him enough information on the whereabouts of the Japanese fleet; Nimitz was able to lay a trap and destroy the effectiveness of the Japanese fleet for the rest of the war. From that time period on the Japanese were on the defense. This movie has an all star cast but they do not overshadow the importance of this epic naval story!

Like the "Longest Day," this is a great movie showing the leadership challenges of conducting such a large military operation.

Midway (Collector's Edition) Specifications

Six months after the Japanese destroyed the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, the Americans discovered the Japanese were planning to seize the Naval base at Midway Island--a perfect staging point for invading Hawaii or the mainland. Outnumbered four to one, the Americans won a surprise victory and shattered the backbone of the Japanese Imperial Navy. This 1976 film feels more like a history lesson than a drama, but World War II buffs will appreciate the attention to historical fact (especially the way in which fate and a few bad decisions turned the tide), as well as the generous use of actual battle footage. The all-star cast includes Robert Mitchum, James Coburn, and Cliff Robertson in cameos and a whole slew of familiar TV faces in supporting roles. Hal Holbrook is fun as an oddball intelligence officer. --Geof Miller

The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition)

The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition) Review

Only a Scottsman like Sean Connery [AKA James Bond :-) ] could pull off a Russian sub skipper and right from the opening scene and set the pace for this coldwar thriller. When I first actually read the book I was impressed the plot which I was sure could only end up in some war. When I read that the movie was being made I couldn't image who could play this role well enough until I read it was Bond :-) .

I thought that Alex Baldwin did a good job as Jack Ryan, but the acting is over the top at times. Later movies had Harrison Ford in this role and that for me is a better fit...hell he even looks a bit like the pictures of Tom Clancy in shades.

All in all its still a great worth while movie all round.

I give it 4 out of 5 nukes

The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition) Overview

Based on Tom Clancy's bestseller, directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER sweats with high-tech anxiety and the tension of men who hold Doomsday in their hands. A new technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it - because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

The Hunt for Red October (Special Collector's Edition) Specifications

Before Harrison Ford assumed the mantle of playing Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan hero in Patriot Games, Alec Baldwin took a swing at the character in this John McTiernan film and hit one to the fence. If less instantly sympathetic than Ford, Baldwin is in some respects more interesting and nuanced as Ryan, and drawing comparisons between both actors' performances can make for some interesting postmovie discussion. That aside, The Hunt for Red October stands alone as a uniquely exciting adventure with a fantastic costar: Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain attempting to defect to the West on his ship. Ryan must figure out his true motives for approaching the U.S. McTiernan (Predator, Die Hard) made an exceptionally handsome movie here with action sequences that really do take one's breath away. --Tom Keogh
