Masters of the Universe (Keepcase)

Masters of the Universe (Keepcase) Review

I grew up watching the He-Man Cartoon and She-Ra Cartoon. Had all the action figures and everything that goes with them. I watched this movie when it first came out and I still love it today! It is an awsome movie and a great kids movie! right up there with Labyrinth! Wish they had made second movie!

Depeche Mode: Tour of the Universe - Barcelona 20/21:11:09 [Blu-ray]

Depeche Mode: Tour of the Universe - Barcelona 20/21:11:09 [Blu-ray] Review

Finally a Blu-Ray set of Depeche Mode Live with lots of music videos and other extras. One concern there doesn't seem to be a deluxe Blu-Ray set including the 2 CD's like there is for the deluxe DVD which includes the 2 CD's. Depeche Mode are one of my favorite bands going back to their first released song Photographic on the Some Bizzare Collection.

I was so happy with all of the remastered 5.1 sets of each of their albums. The remixing of vocals and instrumentation brought you deeper inside the songs while maintaining the integrity of the original vinyl recording. Most importantly the original CD release of albums like Music For The Masses and Violator were mastered so badly, it detracted from the genius of the songs. The 5.1 remasters Got The Balance Right !!!

I hope they will re-release all of their live concerts and videos in Blu-Ray, not just from the improved picture quality but most importantly for the sound.

Across the Universe

Across the Universe Review

This was one of my favorites DVDs, and I just upgraded to the Blu-ray version which looks fantastic. First of all, I am a life-long fan of the Beatles' music, but believe me, if the movie sucks I don't care how good the music is, it still sucks. I actually avoided this movie because I hate it when other people try to perform their music, the same way I don't like tribute bands or Elvis impersonators, etc. Somewhere I saw the black soloist and choir from the movie performing their version of "Let It Be", and I was so blown away I decided to rent the movie. Each time I watch it I'm blown away again with the creative genius it took to make this; the story line is credible, you really care about the characters, and it's the ONLY time I've ever heard Beatles songs redone in a good way. While you don't have to be a fan to enjoy the movie, you might have to have lived through that decade to fully appreciate what the director succeeded in doing: taking a decade that has become almost a cliche and making it fresh through the music of just one band.

Incidentally, my grown son happened to drop by while this was on and was so intrigued he wanted to see it from the beginning. This is a guy who came up with Snoop Dog, Bob Marley and Tupac, to name a few of his favorites, and prefers typical "guy" movies (action, explosions, fighting, gangsters). He really liked this movie!

Others have given very thorough reviews so I won't. I just didn't want people to be scared away from trying this movie because of the reviewer who dismissed it as just a bunch of Beatles music and a nude scene. That couldn't be further from the truth, and in fact if you're not a fan of the Beatles you might just find you like their music the way these guys have done it. They did it that well.

Across the Universe Overview

THE MUSIC OF THE BEATLES AND THE VIETNAM WAR FORM THE BACKDROP FOR THE ROMANCE BETWEEN AN UPPER-CLASS AMERICAN GIRL AND A POOR LIVERPUDLIAN ARTIST.

Across the Universe Specifications

Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country. A fairly bizarre juxtaposition of extremely stylized, almost hallucinogenic scenes of swirling colors and reflections, highly choreographed dance segments, seemingly commonplace character interaction, and emotionally packed close-up footage of characters lost in contemplative song, this film imparts a good sense of the confusion and passion of the time and is at once powerful, invigorating, and disturbing. The film runs a bit long at 2-hours 11-minutes and several segments drag noticeably thanks to some incredibly slow song tempos. Warning: this production may change how you think about a favorite Beatles song forever. --Tami Horiuchi
