The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Review

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Feature

  • 13 GHOSTS OF SCOOBY-DOO, THE (DVD MOVIE)

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Overview

In The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, mystery and mayhem prevail when Scooby-Doo and Shaggy accidentally set free a pack of troublemaking spooks. On a trip to Honolulu, Daphne's plane winds up landing in Tibet. While visiting a temple, Scooby and Shaggy are tricked into opening the Chest of Demons, which houses 13 of the most-frightening ghosts and ghouls to ever haunt the earth. The ghosts however, can only be returned to the chest by those who originally released them. To prevent them from wreaking havoc upon the world, the gang embarks on a global quest to recapture them. Scooby-Doo's nephew, Scrappy-Doo, a mischievous boy named Flim-Flam, and warlock Vincent Van Ghoul join the team throughout the season, as they set out to trap the escaped specters.

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo: The Complete Series Specifications

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo! was a 1985 ABC TV series based on the original Hanna-Barbera Saturday-morning cartoon Scooby-Doo. In this series, Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, and Scooby's nephew Scrappy are headed for a vacation in Hawaii when a miscalculation lands them in the mountains of Tibet, where they meet preadolescent con artist Flim Flam and warlock Vincent Van Ghoul (a parody of Vincent Price who's voiced by Vincent Price). Scooby and Shaggy have the misfortune of opening a chest of demons that releases 13 dangerous ghosts that only they can recapture. Thus begins a quest that takes the newly formed gang around the world under the direction of Vincent Van Ghoul and his crystal ball. Never far behind are two bumbling ghosts, Weerd and Bogel, whose mission is to foil the gang's every move. From Maldor the Malevolent and his forest-come-to-life to the trance-of-love-wielding gaze of Nicara, the time-speeding Time Slime, and the calliope-playing Professor Fantasmo, each of the ghosts and demons poses their own special challenge for Scooby and his friends, but somehow the gang always manages to work together and contain their target. The characters have a bit of a 1980s look and it does seem a bit strange to be missing Fred and Velma, but Flim Flam adds a different dimension with his crazy schemes that seem destined to backfire, and Vincent Van Ghoul brings a whole new sense of spookiness. Naturally, humor abounds and Shaggy and Scooby can be counted on for their fraidy-cat nerves and their penchant for Scooby snacks. Of special note is the "That's Monstertainment" episode, which parallels the classic movie Frankenstein with Scooby and Shaggy in the leading roles. Bonus features include the "Don't Feed the Animals" episode from the Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue series and a preview for the Scooby-Doo First Frights video game. My Best Friend's Wedding (Special Edition)

My Best Friend's Wedding (Special Edition) Review

My Best Friend's Wedding (Special Edition) Overview

MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING - SPECIAL ED - DVD Movie

My Best Friend's Wedding (Special Edition) Specifications

One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realizes she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behavior, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalize on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director P.J. Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. --Jeff Shannon

Pride and Prejudice [Blu-ray]

Pride and Prejudice [Blu-ray] Review

Pride and Prejudice [Blu-ray] Overview

Studio: A&e Home Video Release Date: 04/27/2010

Pride and Prejudice [Blu-ray] Specifications

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting.

The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own.

For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown

How I Met Your Mother: Season Five

How I Met Your Mother: Season Five Review

How I Met Your Mother: Season Five Feature

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • AC-3; Box set; Color; Dolby; DVD; Subtitled; Widescreen; NTSC

How I Met Your Mother: Season Five Overview

Suit up for the hilarious Season Five of How I Met Your Mother, the outrageous, Emmy-nominated hit starring Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan!  The show’s funniest season to date is loaded with hook-ups, break-ups, and the return of Slapsgiving— not to mention the hottest guest stars imaginable, including Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, and Rachel Bilson.  On the dating front, Barney and Robin take their relationship to the next level—before calling it off—and Ted meets the roommate of his future wife in this uproarious, modern-day love story told in reverse.

How I Met Your Mother: Season Five Specifications

How I Met Your Mother excels in tossed-off bits of genius, from a saccharine book-on-tape read by Kenny Rogers to "But, uhm" to bagpipes to harmonizing with Will Shortz and Peter Bogdanovich. These little gems of comic absurdity perfectly complement the sitcom's other great strength, which is clever, twisty storytelling--plots that fold back into themselves, unfold in flashbacks, or cross-reference previous episodes. This narrative inventiveness is hardly surprising, given that the premise of the entire series is that it's being told by the future central character, Ted Mosby, to his two children, gradually revealing how he came to marry their mother.

By the fifth season, this premise is growing a little bit threadbare (particularly after some of the red herrings of the past two seasons), yet the show continues to hold abundant pleasures. The cast--Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, and Neil Patrick Harris--have an effortless lock on their characters, allowing them to pull off some perilously goofy bits that, in less confident hands, could have foundered (a musical homage to wearing suits, for example). The writing is crisp and driven; this half-hour sitcom crams in more plot turns than your average hour-long drama. The fifth season is not good to start with--the humor is much, much stronger if you've grown to love these characters over the previous four seasons--but for everyone who's been following Ted, Robin, Marshall, Lily, and Barney, it's essential viewing. Some surprising moments of melancholy are completely earned and stand out from the typical sitcom overreaching for "significance"; these moments are successfully rooted in the characters, who become more real every season… yes, even Barney. --Bret Fetzer

The Craft [Blu-ray]

The Craft [Blu-ray] Review

The Craft [Blu-ray] Feature

  • Condition: New
  • Format: Blu-ray
  • AC-3; Color; Dolby; Dubbed; Subtitled; Widescreen

The Craft [Blu-ray] Overview

Sarah has always been different. So as the new girl at St. Benedict's Academy, she immediately falls in with the high school outsiders. But these girls won't settle for being powerless misfits. They have discovered The Craft, and they are going to use it.

The Craft [Blu-ray] Specifications

If Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents the lighter side of high school as a macabre experience, here's a movie that asks the burning question, "What happens when angst-ridden teenagers develop supernatural powers?" More to the point, how do four outcast teenaged witches handle their ability to cast wicked spells on the taunting classmates who've nicknamed them "The Bitches of Eastwick"? The answer, of course, is "don't get mad, get even." That's about all there is to this terminally silly movie, which makes up for its ludicrous plot by letting its young female cast have a field day as they indulge their dark fantasies. Fairuza Balk is enjoyable as the most wicked of the witches, and is therefore the focus of the film's most dazzling special effects. But it's Neve Campbell from television's Party of Five who made this film a modest box-office hit, just before she became her generation's fright-movie favorite in Scream and its popular sequel. --Jeff Shannon
