Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (Original UK Unedited Edition)

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (Original UK Unedited Edition) Review

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (Original UK Unedited Edition) Overview

Downton Abbey -- a sprawling, lavish Edwardian mansion nestled in the Yorkshire landscape -- needs an heir. Dame Maggy Smith stars as Violet, the stubborn Dowager Countess of Grantham matriarch of Downton. Hugh Bonneville stars as her son, the stoic, unflapple Lord Crawley. Elizabeth McGovern is his far-sighted American wife, Cora. From Academy Award-winner Julian Fellowes. This is the original un-edited UK version of the program.

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (Original UK Unedited Edition) Specifications

An addictive blend of suds and social commentary, ITV's Downton Abbey brings a microcosm of Edwardian society together under one roof. Lord Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and his family live a life of leisure, while a fleet of servants, including butler Carson (Jim Carter), attend to their every need, but two events conspire to shake things up: the sinking of the Titanic, which claims Crawley's heirs, and the return of his valet, Bates (Brendan Coyle). Since Crawley and Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) have three daughters, his distant solicitor cousin, Matthew (Dan Stevens), becomes heir to the estate. With that, the scheming begins, since Thomas the footman (Rob James-Collier) views Bates as an interloper and Crawley's mother, Violet (Maggie Smith), feels the same way about Matthew's mother, Isobel (Penelope Wilton).

In the tradition of the BBC's Upstairs Downstairs and Robert Altman's Gosford Park, for which writer-creator Julian Fellowes received an Academy Award, the royals, servants, and middle-class relations struggle to get along. Sniffs uptight maid Miss O'Brien (Siobhan Finneran), "Gentlemen don't work," but that doesn't stop Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) from competing for Matthew's affections. Though it takes awhile to warm up to the tightest-wound characters, most everyone reveals their more vulnerable side before the first season comes to an end, and a new small-screen classic is born.

The entire sprawling cast is quite wonderful, particularly Bonneville, Carter, and James-Collier, who provide a fascinating study in contrasts (the latter is downright dastardly). Unlike the version that aired on PBS's Masterpiece Classic, this set offers seven parts rather than four. Extras include a featurette, in which cast and crew discuss the production, and an introduction to Hampshire's Highclere Castle, which doubles for Downton Abbey. The first season was a phenomenon in the United Kingdom, and Fellowes has promised a second season set during World War I. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) - Winner of 3 Academy Awards* - Dashing Errol Flynn triumphs in this lavish version of the Robin Hood saga. Olivia de Havilland (as Maid Marian), supreme villains Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains and a boisterous who’s who of character actors co-star. Welcome to Sherwood! CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935) Flynn skyrocketed to stardom as a 17th-century physician turned pirate after escaping unjust political imprisonment. Radiant Olivia de Havilland co-stars in the first of their eight films together. Michael Curtiz directs. THE SEA HAWK (1940) Cannons thunder, blades clatter and Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s dyamic music swirls as Flynn plays a seagoing rogue who commandeers a 40-gun galleon, endures captivity, then boldly escapes to warn England of Spain’s armada. ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN (1948) - Academy Award* Winner - In this later-career swashbuckler, Flynn is a warmer, wittier version of his earlier characters as he rescues the Spanish queen (Viveca Lindfors) from the snares of an evil duke.

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Broadway Musicals (Show Boat / Annie Get Your Gun / Kiss Me Kate / Seven Brides for Seven Brothers)

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Broadway Musicals (Show Boat / Annie Get Your Gun / Kiss Me Kate / Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) Review

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Broadway Musicals (Show Boat / Annie Get Your Gun / Kiss Me Kate / Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) Overview

SHOW BOAT (1951) A vivid and vibrant saga of riverboat lives and loves has glorious stars (Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Marge and Gower Champion) in Technicolor radiance, timeless Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein II songs and an equally timeless outcry against racial bigotry. Like Ol' Man River, its delights just keep rollin' along. ANNIE GET YOUR GUN Betty Hutton (as Annie Oakley) and Howard Keel (as Frank Butler) star in this sharpshootin' funfest an Oscar winner for adaptation scoring based on the Broadway smash boasting Irving Berlins beloved songs, including Doin' What Comes Naturally, I Got Lost in His Arms and the anthemic There's No Business like Show Business. SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS The perfect marriage of song and dance! Backwoods boys inspired by romance and the lure of hot biscuits raid the local town for brides. Un-uh: The would-be brides insist the fellas first become respectable! Howard Keel and Jane Powell head a leaping whoop for joy in this exuberant Oscar winner. KISS ME KATE When squabbling ex-married's Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel are cast as squabbling Renaissance romantics in a musical The Taming of the Shrew, life imitates art, art imitates life and it all proves no musical comedy imitates this backstage/onstage delight from the Broadway hit with 14 peerless Cole Porter songs. It's all Too Darn Hot!

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Broadway Musicals (Show Boat / Annie Get Your Gun / Kiss Me Kate / Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) Specifications

Turner Classic Movies' Greatest Classic Films Collection: Broadway Musicals collects four movies on two double-sided discs, with top picture quality and the bonus features that appeared on disc 1 when one of those films was released on a two-disc set, or the features that appeared on the single discs of the other three. The four films here aren't really Broadway musicals, but rather movies that were (with one exception) based on material originally created for the Broadway stage. Show Boat was one of the earliest shows in the modern-musical era, and this 1951 adaptation (the third, following versions in 1929 and 1936) stars familiar MGM players Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, and others in Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's Southern epic, featuring "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Loving That Man of Mine," and more. Annie Get Your Gun (1950) stars Bettie Hutton (in a role intended for Judy Garland) as a spunky Western gal who gives Howard Keel all he can handle, and features such Irving Berlin standards as "There's No Business Like Show Business," "Anything You Can Do," and "Doin' What Comes Naturally." Grayson and Keel return again in Kiss Me Kate (1953), as life imitates art in a production of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, and the Cole Porter songs include "Wunderbar" and "So in Love." The exception is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), one of MGM's greatest original creations that was itself adapted for the stage years later. Keel woos Jane Powell to become his wife--and mother figure for his six brothers. Hilarity and much dancing ensue (especially in Michael Kidd's rousing barn number), and the Gene de Paul-Johnny Mercer songs include "Bless Yore Beautiful Hide," "Wonderful Wonderful Day," and "Spring, Spring, Spring." Bonus material on the two-sided discs is relatively plentiful for the TCM Classics series since only one of the movies had been released on a two-disc set: you lose Seven Brides for Seven Brothers' alternate cut and some supplemental material, but you still get director Stanley Donen's commentary track plus some trailers, shorts, and other material for the other three movies. --David Horiuchi

The Rescuers Down Under (Disney Gold Classic Collection)

The Rescuers Down Under (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Review

The Rescuers Down Under is one hour and sixteen minutes long was release in theaters one November 16, 1990. This was not a direct to video movie, but an actual movie. This was the second Disney movie not to be a musical; the first was The Black Cauldron. Granted in one scene Wilbur is dancing to the song Black Slacks playing on the radio. This was the first movie by Disney to use Computer Animation Production System and replacing drawing each scene by hand. It is thirteen years after the original was released, but it the movie it seems to take place only a few years later. The movie opens up with Cody (a young boy who looks no more then twelve) who has just rescued a giant golden eagle named Marahute. On the way back home he saves the life of a mouse caught in a trap. It is a trap within a trap. As soon as the mouse is freed Cody falls into a deep pit that sets off the alarm for a poacher named Percival C. McLeach and his pet goanna named Joanna. When McLeach arrives to see what the catch is he finds Cody in his trap. McLeach was originally going to let Cody go, but finds Cody with a golden eagle feather in his backpack. He realizes that there is a second giant golden eagle and demands that Cody takes him to it. Cody refuses to tell and McLeach takes him to his hideout. The mouse that is saved by Cody runs to get help and the message goes out to the main headquarters of the Rescue Aid Society in New York City. An emergency meeting is gathered and the Chairmouse calls upon Bernard and Bianca for the job. However, the two are not at the meeting but at a restaurant where Bernard, who is no longer a janitor but the United States representative of the Rescue Aid Society, is trying to proposed marriage to Bianca. This will be an on going gag throughout the movie. The two are summed back to headquarters where they take on the mission to rescue Cody. The two arrive at the hanger to find Orville has retired and his brother Wilbur has taken over the business. Wilbur now runs Albatross Airlines. At first Wilbur does not want to fly to Australia due to the snowstorm outside, but when he hears about the situation with Cody he changes his mind. The three arrive in Australia and are greeted by Jake, the Australia representative of the RAS. After meeting Jake, Wilbur injures his back and is taken to a hospital for treatment. Bernard, Bianca, and Jake head off to rescue Jake. Back at the hideout Cody meet some capture animals and try to set them free by getting the keys off the hook. Their attempts fail when Joanna comes in and smashes the device the captures created to get the keys. Later on Percival comes up with a plan to capture the giant golden eagle. He decides to set Cody free telling him somebody else has captured the eagle and that there is no one to care for her eggs. Cody believing this information, heads to Marahute's nest and is unaware that he is leading McLeach to the nest. At the nest Cody is met by the three rescuers at the nest. The three try to tell him that it is a trap but it is too late. Marahute is captured along with Cody, Bianca, and Jake. Bernard is left behind because he was unable to grab the rope quick enough. Joanna is lowered down on a rope to eat the three eggs but is unable to do the job so she throws the eggs off the cliff. It is later revealed that Bernard switches the eggs for rocks to protect the unborn baby eagles. Wilbur, who has recovered from his wounds, arrives at the nest. Bernard gets Wilbur to sit on the eggs to protect them and Bernard heads off to rescue the captured foursome. On his way there he gets a ride from a wild boar to get them to the group. He is able to get the keys so Bianca and Jake can free themselves. In the meantime McLeach is lowering Cody down to the river where a bunch of hungry crocodiles are waiting to eat him. When the crane gets stuck, McLeach takes out a shotgun to shoot the rope off. Bernard has Joanna chasing him and makes her run into McLeach and sending them both into the river. The rope holding Cody breaks and Cody falls into the river and Bernard dives into the water to rescue him. Just then Jake and Bianca unlock the cage and Marahute flies out along with Jake and Bianca. The three of them rescue Cody and Bernard. Percival C. McLeach is seen going over the waterfalls and it is assumed that is where he met his death. On top of Marahute, Bernard finally proposes to Bianca and she accepts. Meanwhile Wilbur is left to incubate the eggs until they hatch. Overall this was a very good movie and sequel and far better then most of the sequels that are direct to video. This was the second movie in the Disney Renaissance era and the only one not to gross one hundred million dollars or more world wide. The Rescuers Down Under gets an AAAAA+++++.

The Rescuers Down Under (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Specifications

No, this isn't a quickie, direct-to-video sequel, cashing in on the success of the 1977 animated hit about adventurous mice, but a full-blown theatrical effort. This time around, Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) is trying to pop the question to Bianca (Eva Gabor) when they're summoned to Australia, where a young boy has been kidnapped by a pallid, gray-faced poacher (who looks like and is voiced by George C. Scott). Wilbur, a chatterbox of an albatross (John Candy, replacing the late Jim Jordan's character Orville), and Jake (Tristan Rogers), a kangaroo mouse--Bernard is jealous of the dashing rodent--assist the Rescuers in saving the day and imparting a mild environmental message. The film opens with an absolutely breathtaking aerial sequence--this was made near the beginning of Disney's animation renaissance--so impressive it would seem the story, literally, has nowhere else to go but down, but some smart gags, excellent animation, and rollicking adventures ensue. So why isn't it better known? It had the bad luck to open, in 1990, opposite another kids' film--Home Alone. --David Kronke

My 10-year-old daughter (who IS horse crazy) LOVED these movies, and watches them over and over. She thought the International Velvet one was better than the older National Velvet. She has watched Black Beauty about 7,000 times.

1,001 Classic Commercials Collection

1,001 Classic Commercials Collection Review

The people complaining about the bad quality of many of the commercials need to get a clue. When these commercials were made, NO ONE thought they would be of value any time in the future, so they didn't bother to maintain the prints. Complainers should instead be thankful they can see these commercials at all. Anyway, I am still working my way through the first disc of the set, and so far I've been very entertained, even though I did not grow up during the eras of these commercials. Some of the commercials are effective even today (I'd like to try Shasta soda pop, but it isn't available in Canada!), and others are quirky and/or unintentionally hilarious. This is a good DVD set to pull out when you have free time but not enough to watch a full-length movie - just select a category on any of the DVDs, and you'll be entertained for that short time.

1,001 Classic Commercials Collection Overview

Tons of fun for the whole family is in store with this comprehensive collection of the most unforgettable, exceptional, and memorable commercials to hit the small-screen! This is an entire history of American pop culture in its most eloquently simple and straight-forward form. Enjoy reminiscing about years gone by while watching all of your favorite commercials from the past!

Includes legendary favorites from some of the most well-know household brands like Speedy from Alka-Seltzer, The Jolly Green Giant, Barbie, Marlboro, Chevy and more!
